Re: Who does Gandalf fear?
If you read some of Tolkien's other writings, not sure "The Silmarillion," Gandalf initially turned down the mission given to him as a Maia to go to Middle Earth and challenge Sauron. He said he was afraid of Sauron. More reason to go Gandalf (then Olorin) was told.
To quote the immortal Clint Eastwood: "A man's got to know his limitations." Gandalf did; Saruman did not.
