Super LOTR DVD set news!
PJ at SDCC said he hoped to make the set some day, as do New Line! Sounds like a dead cert to me; lets just hope the films are longer too!
Quote:
ComingSoon.Net attended the Digital Bits DVD presentation at Comic-Con International in San Diego today. There were a few interesting items presented at it. First off, the presentation started with a Q&A with Peter Jackson who was filming a DVD bonus feature for some unknown film (it apparently wasn't King Kong). He indicated that he had hours and hours of behind the scenes footage from his older films like Meet the Feebles and Bad Taste. He indicated he wanted to do something with it in the next year, but he had to arrange time to do it. He also stated that he and New Line would like to do a "Super Uber Lord of the Rings" DVD box set. It's not official, but they all want to do it. Jackson wants to do it showing the making of the film from a different perspective.

Re: Super LOTR DVD set news!
Hey, maybe we can finally see an Elf or a Gondorian solider actually kill an Uruk Hai or an orc with a sword! Or maybe the watchers at Cirith Ungol scene with Sam using the light of Earendil!

Re: Super LOTR DVD set news!
I saw PJ interviewed a while back and he said then that he and New Line wanted to do the 'super set' in the new high def-dvd format and were waiting for the industry to settle on which form of the technology it would go with.
At the time of the interview, Paramount, Universal, and Warner Bros., which includes New Line, were backing HD-DVD format developed by Toshiba and NEC. Columbia, MGM, and HP were supporting the Blu-Ray format developed by Sony.
Neither Twenthieth Century Fox or Disney had chosen which format to back.
Both technologies are different enough that if the film industries don't settle on one standard or some compromise of the two technologies we will have to have 2 different DVD players to watch the new movies and our old DVD player to watch our original DVDs. (Sort of like when VCRs first came out in both Betamax and VHS.) Either way, it means investing in a new high def. DVD player. <For that reason, I have limited my purchase of new movies until they settle this.>
PJ was hoping for this to happen with a 5 year anniversary edition, but said it may take him longer to edit all the new material so it may be for the 10 yr. anniv. (Does anyone know when the official 5 yr anniversay is?)
I believe there was an Indy film maker who filmed the whole 'filming of' process and edited a version for PJ. It was without commentary other than what you heard going on with the directors, actors, etc. PJ said he really loved it and would like to have something like it for the super-edition.
Whenever it comes out, I will be one of the first in line to purchase it. But don't hold your breath that it will happen anytime soon.

Ah yes, the Watchers. That scene was good in the book. They showed the Watchers at the gate of Cirith Ungol, but Sam just ran right past them. Of course, the Watchers of Minas Morgul proved a bit nastier - they actually did the Watchers of Cirith Ungol's job: setting off the alarm and waking up the Witch-King. So they worked that part of the story in, just without Sam.

And he shall be known as Elf-friend, Far-Seer, Dark Lord.

I'm pretty sure they had already shot that scene before, but for some reason, PJ decided not to include it in the extended cut. I was really disappointed when I didn't see it not only because was it one of my favorite scenes from both the book and movie, but it also would have been really easy to do.

I think we're still in for a bit of a wait on our super set , if this article is any indication:

Re: Super LOTR DVD set news!
Although this may not be a mortal blow to blu-ray technology, I think it a pretty deep and critical cut.
